CDN Masterworks
Season 2022 · Gala Evening Performance
— ♦ —
SATURDAY · NOVEMBER 12, 2022 · 7:30 PM

This evening's programme presents five major works from the Content Delivery repertoire, performed in order of increasing scale. From the delicate Swiss étude to the monumental enterprise requiem, each composition reveals a distinct approach to the art of moving data across the globe. The 2022 season marks a pivotal year — Cloudflare's R2 première and Akamai's Linode acquisition reshape the landscape of what a CDN can be.

KeyCDN · Swiss, b. 2012
Étude No. 12
in Minimalist Major, for Solo Instrument
Op. 35 · ~35 PoPs Key: $0.04/GB Tempo: Andante simplice Duration: 5 min setup
I.
Semplice — ♩= 92
Pay-As-You-Go Purity
$0.04/GB in NA/EU with a $4/month minimum. No contracts, no complexity. HTTP/2, Brotli compression, free Let's Encrypt SSL. A single, clean melodic line — the Swiss approach to CDN: do one thing with precision.
II.
Moderato — ♩= 108
Real-Time Analytics & Cache Purge
Real-time stats dashboard. Custom cache rules. API-driven zone management. 14-day free trial, no credit card. Basic Layer 3-4 DDoS mitigation. No WAF, no edge compute — the étude deliberately omits orchestral complexity.
Instrumentation
Solo piano (CDN only) — HTTP/2, Brotli, Let's Encrypt SSL, origin shield, instant purge, RESTful API. No orchestral accompaniment (no WAF, no edge compute, no storage).
Critic's Notice · The Edge Times
A miniature of genuine beauty. KeyCDN proves that not every performance requires a full orchestra. For blogs, small business sites, and developers who need fast, cheap content delivery without ceremony, this étude delivers exactly what it promises — nothing more, nothing less. The Swiss precision is admirable; the limited PoP count (~35) and absent security features are its deliberate constraints, not oversights.

Bunny.net · Slovenian, b. 2012
Serenade for Strings
in Value Major, Op. 85
~85 PoPs (2022) Key: $0.01/GB Tempo: Allegro grazioso Duration: Minutes to deploy
I.
Allegro grazioso — ♩= 132
The $0.01 Opening
$0.01/GB in EU/NA with a $1/month minimum. The most charming opening in tonight's programme. Transparent billing with spend caps. Sub-29ms global latency — a performance that defies its modest tuition. Founded with just 3 servers by one frustrated developer.
II.
Andante cantabile — ♩= 72
Image Optimization & Video Streaming
Bunny Optimizer for automatic WebP conversion. Bunny Stream for video hosting — transcoding, storage, and delivery in one. Edge Storage for globally replicated files. Perma-Cache for permanent content retention.
III.
Vivace — ♩= 144
Dashboard & Support Finale
Clean, intuitive dashboard universally praised by users. Fast human support — responses in minutes, not days. Real-time logs, instant purge, Edge Rules for basic logic. Security: basic DDoS, free SSL. Edge compute still in early development (2022).
Instrumentation
String ensemble (CDN + storage + video + optimizer) — elegant, warm, and surprisingly full-bodied for the ensemble size. No heavy brass (enterprise WAF) or percussion (edge compute).
Critic's Notice · The Edge Times
The audience favourite of the evening. This Serenade demonstrates that warmth and technical excellence need not be expensive. The $0.01/GB opening theme drew audible gasps. The Bunny Stream second movement shows growing compositional ambition. One wishes for deeper security scoring and a more developed compute cadenza, but at this price point, criticism feels ungracious. A work of tremendous charm.

Fastly · American, b. 2011
Presto for Solo Violin
in Precision Minor, Op. 150
~70 PoPs (2022) Key: $50/mo min Tempo: Prestissimo — ♩= 208 Duration: Expert-level
I.
Prestissimo — ♩= 208
150ms Global Cache Purge
The fastest passage in the entire CDN repertoire. Instant cache invalidation in ~150ms globally — an order of magnitude faster than any competitor. The opening measures are breathtaking in their velocity and precision. This is virtuosity distilled.
II.
Espressivo — ♩= 88
VCL & Compute@Edge
VCL (Varnish Configuration Language) — a domain-specific notation for programmable edge caching. Compute@Edge runs Rust, JS, and Go via WebAssembly. Named 2022 IDC MarketScape Leader. 100% real-time log streaming — every note heard.
III.
Con fuoco — ♩= 160
Signal Sciences WAF & Security
Signal Sciences WAF (acquired 2020, fully integrated by 2022). DDoS protection, TLS, request isolation. Gartner's Customer's Choice for WAF. The security cadenza is powerful but requires virtuosic technique to execute.
Instrumentation
Solo violin (VCL) with chamber accompaniment (Compute@Edge, WAF, logs) — brilliant, exposed, and unforgiving of imprecision. No orchestral padding. ~70 PoPs = fewer resonance points, but each vibrates at maximum amplitude.
Critic's Notice · The Edge Times
A virtuosic tour de force. The 150ms opening left the hall in stunned silence. VCL gives the soloist control that no other instrument offers — but only a master can play it. The smaller venue (~70 PoPs) means this brilliance doesn't project into every corner, and the $50/month minimum and absent free tier exclude students from the gallery. For engineers who treat configuration as composition, this is the definitive performance.

Cloudflare · American, b. 2009
Symphony No. 9
"The Platform" · in Free Major, Op. 275
~275 PoPs (2022) Key: Free → $200/mo Tempo: Moderato maestoso Duration: Continuous (always expanding)
I.
Moderato maestoso — ♩= 100
The Free Tier Overture
Free: unlimited CDN + unmetered DDoS + SSL + DNS. The most generous opening in the repertoire — accessible to every listener. Pro at $20/mo adds OWASP WAF rules. Business at $200/mo unlocks the full orchestration. The overture alone powers ~20% of all websites.
II.
Allegro con spirito — ♩= 138
Workers & the R2 Première
Workers V8 isolates with KV storage and Durable Objects. The landmark 2022 première: R2 object storage reaches General Availability (September 2022) — S3-compatible with $0 egress fees. D1 SQLite database enters beta. Turnstile CAPTCHA alternative launches. An explosive second movement.
III.
Adagio espressivo — ♩= 60
Security & Zero Trust
Unmetered DDoS on all plans. WAF with OWASP rules (Pro+). Zero Trust (Cloudflare One) for identity-based access without VPN. Bot management, API Gateway. Mitigated a record 26M rps DDoS attack in June 2022. The slow movement's depth belies its apparent calm.
IV.
Finale: Allegro trionfale — ♩= 152
Pages, Stream & Unified Dashboard
Pages for static hosting. Stream for video. Images API. All managed from a unified dashboard — CDN, WAF, DNS, compute, storage in one pane. Wrangler CLI for developer deployment. The finale brings every section of the orchestra together in a triumphant declaration of platform ambition.
Instrumentation
Full orchestra — strings (CDN, 275+ PoPs), brass (DDoS, WAF, Zero Trust), woodwinds (Workers, KV, Durable Objects), percussion (R2, D1, Pages, Stream), and choir (unified dashboard, Wrangler CLI, APIs). The largest ensemble of the evening. 2022 IDC MarketScape Leader.
Critic's Notice · The Edge Times
The symphony of the season. The R2 première in the second movement was the most talked-about event in CDN composition since Workers itself. Zero-egress object storage disrupts cloud pricing norms entirely. The free-tier overture remains the most democratic entry point in the repertoire. Advanced WAF and bot management require Business-tier tickets ($200/mo). The 26M rps DDoS mitigation in June was a live performance under extreme pressure — and the orchestra held. An extraordinary, expansive, and still-growing work.

Akamai · American, b. 1998 (MIT)
Requiem
"For the Enterprise" · in Heritage Minor, Op. 4100
4,100+ edge nodes (2022) Key: Custom $$$ Tempo: Largo maestoso Duration: 6–18+ months (implementation)
I.
Largo maestoso — ♩= 44
Introitus: The Carrier-Embedded Network
4,100+ edge nodes across 135 countries, embedded inside ISP networks. The most monumental opening in the history of CDN composition. Founded at MIT in 1998. Twenty-four years of continuous refinement. No competitor can source these raw materials — they exist only inside carrier networks that Akamai alone has access to.
II.
Dies Irae — ♩= 72
Kona & Prolexic Security
Kona Site Defender — the gold standard enterprise WAF. Prolexic DDoS at 20+ Tbps scrubbing. Bot Manager Premier. The security movement is the most fearsome passage in tonight's programme — a Day of Wrath for any attacker. GDPR, SOC 2, PCI DSS, HIPAA compliance.
III.
Lacrimosa — ♩= 56
The Linode Acquisition
March 2022: Akamai acquires Linode for $900 million. The most consequential M&A passage of the season. Adds cloud computing (VMs, GPU, Kubernetes, object storage) to the CDN/security repertoire. "Akamai Connected Cloud" to launch in 2023. A mournful farewell to the old Akamai — and a transformative birth of the new.
IV.
Lux Aeterna — ♩= 52
Adaptive Media Delivery
Broadcast-grade 4K streaming optimized for the world's largest media events. Image & Video Manager. Download Delivery. EdgeWorkers for edge-side JavaScript. Property Manager with 300+ rules. The eternal light of heritage media delivery — unmatched at scale.
Instrumentation
Cathedral organ, full orchestra, and choir — Kona WAF (organ), Prolexic DDoS (timpani fortissimo), Adaptive Media (full strings), EdgeWorkers (woodwind section), Linode/Connected Cloud (new brass section, 2022 addition). The most massive forces assembled this season. Custom enterprise contracts only — no general admission.
Critic's Notice · The Edge Times
Monumental. The Requiem demands a cathedral to perform in, and only Fortune 500 organizations possess halls of sufficient scale. The Linode acquisition in the third movement reshapes the entire work — Akamai is no longer just a CDN/security composer but an aspiring cloud platform. The Kona/Prolexic security scoring remains the finest in the repertoire. EdgeWorkers compute is functional but years behind Cloudflare's Workers in expressiveness. The price of admission is the highest of any performance this season. For institutional audiences, nothing else achieves this grandeur.
